Description

Item:  Sony WM-DD33 Walkman New Center Gear Repair Kit , new, unused

Sony WM-DD33 Walkman New Center Gear Repair Kit is custom made professionally using CNC, injection molding, etc. Lot of manual work is involved

This kit solves famous center gear crack problem. Now, anyone can fix the gear himself, quickly and easily.  There is no need to remove gear + metal disc from it’s arm.
We spent months of hard work to find suitable design and dimensions. I tested it in many different walkmans and all work very well. Also, there are no more FF/REW problems, caused by old gear plastic deformations. With new center gear, walkman runs smoothly and mechanics is silent. Wow/Flutter was tested to be in specs. Accuracy is guaranteed by design. New plastic gear is pushed to the old metal disc, with help of another metal ring. The whole assembly gets more professional look because part of the new ring is made of metal.

For instructions, how to fix your player, check our guide.

Get your spare parts to be able to fix your cassette player. Check our General Repair Instructions to find basic information about tools and skills needed to repair your player.

Other parts that you will probably also need to fix your player:

  • capstan ring – aged rubber will contribute to noisy mechanics and higher wow/flutter
  • small reel gear – in many cases, this one is cracked, too
  • capacitors – with this kit you will solve “dull sound” problem

Unlike modern electronics, your player was built to last for decades. However, even this player contains some parts that deteriorate and you need to replace them. To fix it, you will need to perform some routine tasks, like replace rubber parts,  do cleaning and lubrication. Finally, you should adjust and check azimuth, output level and speed. Read our Instructions section to learn more about repairs.

Cannot find your part here? First of all, try to find it using our search form. If you cannot find it anyway, then measure dimensions of your part, visit appropriate shop category and choose part that has dimensions similar to your one. Still cannot find it? Most probable reasons of cassette player failure

  • Aged belt – needs to be replaced, there is no other help.
  • Pinch roller – clean it well with IPA. If it doesn’t help, then you need to replace it.
  • Corroded battery contacts – clean them well
  • Volume pot oxidized – there are special sprays for that purpose. Apply only small drop, do not spray everything

Other: leaked capacitors, cracked plastic parts, old grease and oil turned into glue, dirty switches, dirt inside player, worn head (can be lapped), faulty electronics, damage caused by leaked battery, dry motor bearings

After each repair of cassette player, speed must be adjusted!

1 review for Sony WM-DD33 Walkman New Center Gear Repair Kit

  1. Luke Gonsalves (verified owner)

The metal plate of the gear I received was misaligned to the center of the gear so that when installed, it runs into the head block slider making a ticking sound. Very disappointed as it seems I have replaced one ticking sound with another.

This noise is there because the center gear assembly is a little eccentric.
The problem is not in the new center gear design, it is pretty concentric. When the center gear was produced originally, the metal disc was inserted into the mold and then it was filled with POM plastic. Sometimes it happened that the metal disc was not inserted exactly into the middle. Normally, it was not a problem, because the plastic center and outer gear were always concentric. Only the metal disc was shifted a bit. But the new center gear design relies on this metal disc concentricity. Approximately, two of 10 gears has more or less of such a problem.
You can compensate for this metal disc eccentricity by making the new gear a little eccentric, too. I used to grind it from the inner side using the Dremel tool and then place it in such a way that the eccentricity of the final assembly is removed. If you position it correctly, then the eccentricity of the final assembly will be eliminated.
After you install the gear, you do not need to re-assemble everything. Just install the center gear only, and while slowly rotating it with your finger, watch the distance between the teeth of center gear and REW gear. Use a magnifying glass for it. It must be constant.
If the gap changes as you rotate the gear, then remove the center gear, release all six screws and turn the gear ring about 30 degrees. Tighten the screw and watch the gap again. Repeat it until the gap is uniform.
